Mr Roberts finds himself awoken inexplicably in a white room. A man sits before him at a desk and in between them stands a black button. If Mr Roberts pushes it, he will receive a briefcase filled with millions of dollars. Or he can take the key to the door and leave penniless. The catch? Pushing the button will result in the death of a human being. What would you do? EDIT 1: Some people have observed a similarity in the premise of this film and an revival episode of The Twilight Zone in 1986. Please note (1) We had never seen the episode and only learned of it long after we'd finished the film. (2) The Twilight Zone weren't the first to do it. There was a short story before that, which was in turn based on an old premise called the 'Faustian Bargain', around since the 16th century (deal with the 'devil'). An almost identical premise exists in several cultures. Richard Kelly is even making a film with this premise called 'The Box'. (3) Our film is similar in premise, but different in plot, characters, dialogue, aesthetics, setting, moral meaning, religious undertone, twist etc. Each version, including ours, aims to bring something new to an old idea. I would have liked to do something more ambitious, but being that I was working alone for the entirety of the film and had other projects in production at the same time I had to keep things simple. 10 minutes by Ahmed Imamovic - BEST SHORT FILM IN EUROPE

10 minutes by Ahmed Imamovic. 1994. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Rome, Italy. How many different things can happen for only 10 Minutes. The film won the award for the best European short film in 2002. This short film, as its title indicates lasts only 10 minutes, but it tells a much longer story which unravels only in our imagination upon seeing the end of the film. While 10 minutes in someone's life mean nothing, they can be fatal in another: a boy and his loving family, tragedy in a war-torn city, death and destruction. All in just ten minutes. The film follows two simultaneous story lines: one set in Rome, and one in Sarajevo, in 1994, the worst time of the war in Bosnia. Although the Rome part was not filmed on the original location, that does not take away anything from the quality of the film, it was just a symbolic element anyway. Cast is great, story is very compact and well written, direction dynamic and precise. There is nothing out of place in the film: well structured, stripped of false pathos, realistic, it is very straight forward. In other words, this is a jewel of a film, and it was not by chance that it won the award for the best European short film in 2002. 10 minutes for me is definitely one of the most moving and powerful films about wartime Sarajevo. Behind the scene: I read that the director Ahmed Imamovic, in search of Japanese for the role of the tourist, had to go to the Japanese Embassy in Sarajevo and ask one of the staff to perform in the film. Shane Acker's '9' Short Film (2005)

9 is also an upcoming computer animated feature film adapted from the short film, is produced in part by Tim Burton, Timur Bekmambetov, and Jim Lemley and is scheduled for release on September 9, 2009. The film will be released by Focus Features. To see the trailer for the film click: www.youtube.com The short film took four and a half years, on and off, to create. Acker used Maya 1.55.5, Photoshop for the textures, After Effects for compositing, and Premiere for editing. Summary; 9 is a sentient rag doll who appears to be the last of his kind, living in the ruins of a decaying parallel world, and is hunted relentlessly by a twisted mechanical beast that has killed eight of his rag doll kindred by stealing their souls with a canister-like talisman. 9 was formerly accompanied by his friend and mentor, the one-eyed 5, with whom he scavenged the ruins of their world in search of tools that would help them survive. However, the monster attacked 5 and stole his soul with its talisman, though 9 narrowly escaped with a similar, glowing talisman given to him by 5. In an attempt to destroy the monster, 9 prepares a trap and lures it into an old building where it is briefly subdued, allowing 9 to steal its talisman. The monster breaks free and chases 9 through the building, cornering him on a wooden plank elevated high above the floor. Just as the monster crawls along the unstable plank and approaches him, 9 leaps to safety and knocks the plank down. The monster plummets to the ...
