The Academy Award-nominated short animated film Oktapodi was created at Lecole Gobelins, l'école de l'image ("school of the image") using the SGI® Render Management solution. The solution consists of a powerful combination of servers, cluster management software and render management software from Silicon Graphics and PipelineFX. Oktapodi, where an octopus heroically pursues and fights a fishmonger to keep his beloved out of the cooking pot, was originally produced for opening night festivities at the famed Annecy International Animation Festival in Annecy, France. The animated short, which has won 19 awards at animation festivals and technical conventions around the world, was created by LEcole Gobelins students Emud Mokhberi, Thierry Marchand, Julien Bocabeille, François-Xavier Chanioux, Olivier DeLabarre, and Quentin Marmier. Oktapodi was one of 50 short animated films that were entirely rendered in high definition on the SGI Render Management solution for the Festival. SGIs Render Management solution excelled with the SGI® Altix® XE cluster systems based on Intel® Xeon® processors, and PipelineFX Qube! render farm management software. PAS candidate Abdul Wahid Enduts by-election campaign took a festive twist yesterday when he presented the Chinese community in Kg Cina with calligraphy bearing Chinese New Year messages. The highlight of the event saw Abdul Wahid displaying his calligraphy skills by writing four Chinese characters fairness and justice which he defines as the best ang pow. During Chinese New Year, many receive ang pow. Some will receive money and some will receive gifts. But remember the best ang pow you can get are these four words. This is the ang pow which we should fight for, he said. Abdul Wahid claims that this was his first ever attempt at Chinese calligraphy and by most accounts, his efforts were decent despite the fact that he was aided by pencil marks on the paper. According to the PKR activist who organised the event, Abdul Wahid was initially asked to write traditional Chinese New Year greetings but he had chosen his own wordings to complement his campaign. Abdul Wahid however displayed less grace when he went on his handshaking rounds with the Chinese community. The five-term Wakaf Mempelam assemblyperson appeared hurried and barely spoke to the voters. Several members of the community expressed disappointment that Abdul Wahid walked by without acknowledging them. Minutes later, Abdul Wahid rushed off in his black SUV to a nearby Kuala Ibai after learning that a party activists mother had just passed away. Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan and Ustad Abdul Karim Khan popularized the Kirana Gharana style of classical music in India. �The King of Music�Although a youthful prodigy of the Kolhapur court, remaining unchallenged after his public debut there at age 18, Abdul Wahid Khan had no inclination to spend time singing in the courts. Instead he lived a devout, reclusive life, singing in the presence of holy men and at the tombs of Sufi saints and only occasionally sang in public. The most striking fact on his performance was apparently his alap. The time he took, the care, to elaborate the raga was exceptional among khayal singers: he might take hours on one raga. When Salamat Ali Khan was asked by one of his disciples for a description of Abdul Wahid Khan, he replied, �He would begin to improvise in Lahore and you could travel to Delhi and back, and he would still be improvising. More than that you don�t ask.� Ustad Ali Akbar Khan said that when most musicians came to the radio station, they sang their raga and went home. When Abdul Wahid Khan would come, however, he would sing his scheduled broadcast and then just continue for 20 hours or so. People would come and go, and he would still be singing. His command of the art was such that no other musician ever performed in his presence. Abdul Wahid Khan practiced Todi and Darbari day in and day out.
