When I started playing the ukulele, and knowing that Christmas was around the corner; I asked myself, "Is there such a thing as a Hawaiian Christmas song?" and by the powers of King Kamehameha, there is! It's "Mele Kalikimaka" Imagine Christmas in Hawaii...aaaaah. Never been, but would love to find out how it really is. I'm always fond of other cultures and it's music and learning the languages. The Hawaiian language does not include all the sounds found in the English language (notably the letter R). Thus the familiar English phrase of "Merry Christmas" when pronounced using Hawaiian language syllables becomes "Mele Kalikimaka" (note the substitution of L's for R's). "Mele Kalikimaka" is therefore not Hawaiian for "Merry Christmas," but simply a Hawaiian transliteration. I was introduced to this song through Donnie Darko, and it was brought back to life through Gears of War; epic advertising to say the least. Live Mar 19 2010, Wed, 2000, Germany It's been more than 2 years since I've done a live performance. After how many times I do this, I still get stagefright..=) Many have asked me for an updated version of this song...Although not perfect...it is updated =) Things you may or may not notice: 1. For those who know the song..I fudged on the chords in the beginning..=) 2. I had to edit a few seconds for privacy for those I've mentioned. 3. At the time I stopped playing, you can see the MCs and stagehands behind the curtains checking up on me probably wondering "What the heck is going on out there, is it time for us to come out already?" 4. I started to scoot back in my chair...and you can see my right leg tapping..planning my exit strategy :) 5. I was suppose to exit out where I entered..but I just wanted to just get off the stage as fast as I can =) Never knew that this song would evoke such emotion and it just had to be in front of 200+-how lucky of me ;). I probably will rethink this song if I ever have to play it live again. But I'm glad that I was able to finish the song and play it for the loved ones who was listening down on me...

The Road Not Taken (Robert Frost) Read by JC Van Luyn

One of my favorite poems... I believe songwriting can be pure poetry, and sometimes poems can be written as songs. And we can learn so much from poems. Hopefully to do more of this in the future. If there's a poem you like read (must be in Public Domain) let me know about it...=) The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost (1874-1963) Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
