JFK SPEECH ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS TESTING BAN AND WORLD PEACE

A Harrowing speech from JFK to the UN assembly, on the introduction of the limited test ban treaty, it lasted a while, A great speech, not once do you hear him mention New World Order. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917--November 22, 1963), was the thirty-fifth President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. After Kennedy's leadership as commander of the USS PT-109 during World War II in the South Pacific, his aspirations turned political. Kennedy represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953 as a Democrat, and in the US Senate from 1953 until 1961. Kennedy defeated former Vice President and Republican candidate Richard Nixon in the 1960 US presidential election, one of the closest in American history. To date, he is the only practicing Roman Catholic to be elected President and the only President to have won a Pulitzer Prize. His administration witnessed the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Space Race, the American Civil Rights Movement and early events of the Vietnam War. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the crime, but was murdered two days later by Jack Ruby before he could be put on trial. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald had acted alone in killing the president; however, the House Select Committee on Assassinations declared in 1979 that there may have been ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Sedan-104kt

Credit Must Go To Peter Kuran Producer/Director For this footage. Storax Sedan was a shallow underground nuclear test conducted at the Nevada Test Site at 37.177048° N 116.046653° W by the United States on July 6, 1962 as part of Operation Plowshare program to investigate the use of nuclear weapons for mining, cratering, and other civilian purposes. The blast had a yield of 104 kilotons (435 terajoules) and displaced more than 11 million tonnes (12 million short tons) of soil and resulted in a radioactive cloud that rose to an altitude of 3.7 km (12000 feet). The radioactive dust plume headed northeast and then east towards the Mississippi River. It created a crater 100 m (320 feet) deep and has a diameter of about 390 m (1280 feet). It is about 21 km (13 miles) away from Groom Lake. On March 2, 2005 Ellen Tauscher, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives representing the state of California, gave congressional testimony on the containment of nuclear testing debris, using the Sedan test as an example of one which produced a considerable amount of radioactive fallout. A reporter mistook the word Sedan for the Sudan, an east African nation, and this mistake was placed into the Congressional Record. Within days of this error, the international community took notice. Sudanese officials responded to this stating that "the Sudanese government takes this issue seriously and with extreme importance," and China's Xinhua General News Service even went so far as to ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Cannon-Grable 15KT

Upshot-Knothole Grable was a nuclear weapons test conducted by the United States as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole. Detonation of the associated nuclear weapon occurred shortly after its deployment at 8:30am PDT (1530 UTC) on May 25, 1953, in Area 5 of the Nevada Test Site. The codename Grable was chosen because the letter Grable is phonetic for, G, stands for "gun", since the warhead was a gun-type fission weapon. It was in the form of a shell, or artillery-fired atomic projectile (AFAP), the first of its kind. Grable was only the second gun-type warhead ever detonated (the first was Little Boy, the weapon used against Hiroshima; all other atomic weapons were and are implosion-type weapons). The shell, designated a Mark 9 nuclear weapon, had a diameter of 280 mm (11.02 in), was 54.4 in. (138 cm) long and weighed 803 lb. (364 kg) The gun it was fired from had a muzzle velocity of 2060 ft/s. (625 m/s), for a nominal range of 20 miles, and weighed 85 t (77 metric tons). The detonation of Grable occurred 19 seconds after its firing.[1] It detonated over 11000 yards (over 6.25 miles, 10 km) away from the gun it was fired from, over a part of NTS known as Frenchman Flat. The explosion was an air burst of 524 ft. (160 m) above the ground (24 ft./7 m above its designated burst altitude), 87 ft. (26 m) west and 136 ft. (41 m) south of its target (slightly uprange). Its yield was estimated at 15 kilotons, around the same level as Little Boy. An anomalous feature of the blast ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-596-Chinese Test 22kt

This pure-fission U-235 implosion fission device named "596" was China's first nuclear test. The device weighed 1550 kg. No plutonium was available at this time. 596 is the codename of the People's Republic of China's first nuclear weapons test, detonated on October 16, 1964 at the Lop Nur test site. It was a uranium-235 implosion fission device and had a yield of 22 kilotons. With the test, China became the fifth nuclear power. The People's Republic of China began developing nuclear weapons in the late 1950s with substantial Soviet assistance. The order for the Chinese nuclear weapons program, designated by the codename of "02", was given by Chairman Mao Tse Tsung himself, who believed that without a nuclear weapon China would not be taken seriously as a world power. The events of the First Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1954-55 cemented Mao's belief that unless China had nuclear weapons of its own, it would constantly be under the threat of nuclear blackmail from the United States. Prior to 1960, direct Soviet military assistance had included the provision of advisors and a vast variety of equipment. Of the assistance provided, most significant to China's future strategic nuclear capability were an experimental nuclear reactor, facilities for processing uranium, a cyclotron, and some equipment for a gaseous diffusions plant. At one point the Soviet Union even agreed to supply a prototype nuclear weapon for analysis by the Chinese; this agreement was not, however, put into ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Cannikin-5mt

Credit Must Go To Peter Kuran Producer/Director For this footage. Cannikin was detonated on 6 November 1971. The announced yield was "less than five" megatons -- the largest underground nuclear test in US history. (Estimates for the precise yield range from 4.4 Mt to 5.2Mt.) The ground lifted 20 feet, caused by an explosive force equivalent almost 400 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb. Subsidence and faulting at the site created a new lake, over a mile wide. The explosion caused a seismic shock of 7.0 on the Richter scale, causing rockfalls and turf slides of a total of 35000 square feet.Though earthquakes and tsunamis predicted by environmentalists did not occur, a number of small tectonic events did occur in the following weeks, thought to be due to the interaction of the explosion with local tectonic stresses. Amchitka is a volcanic, tectonically unstable island in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in southwest Alaska. Amchitka was selected by the United States Atomic Energy Commission to be the site for underground detonations of nuclear weapons. Three such tests were carried out: Long Shot, an 80 kiloton blast in 1965; Milrow, a 1 megaton blast in 1969; and Cannikin in 1971 — at "under 5 megatons", the largest underground test ever conducted by the United States. The tests were highly controversial, with environmental groups fearing that the Cannikin explosion, in particular, would cause severe earthquakes and tsunamis. Though performed as part of the ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Hardtack-Teak 1.9mt

In 1958 the arms race proceeded apace, with the enormous weapons production infrastructure and both weapons labs operating at full speed. Hardtack I included 35 tests, the largest test series so far (1958 in fact saw a total of 77 US tests, more than the three previous record setting years combined). Partly this burst of testing activity was due to building pressure for an imminent test moratorium, leading the weapons labs to rush as many device types to the test range as possible. A total of 35.6 megatons were shot during this series. The lab tests centered on ICBM and SLBM missile warheads and high yield strategic bombs. The DOD conducted high altitude multi-megaton tests to study their usefulness for ABM (anti-ballistic missile) warheads, and discovered the high-altitude EMP (electromagnetic pulse) effect in the process. Effects tests of underwater explosions were also conducted. At least 14 mark-designated warheads were tested, plus additional developmental designs not yet awarded a serial number. These included the Mk/TX/XW - 7, 25, 31, 34, 35, 39, 41, 43, 46/53, 47, 49, 50, and 51. This series fired the largest tests since Ivy and Castle (and never equalled since in later US tests) and led to the development and deployment of the largest US weapon ever fielded, the 25 Mt Mk-41 bomb; and the largest US missile warhead ever fielded, the W-53 9 Mt Titan-II warhead. An air dropped bomb variant of the W-53 was the largest (and oldest) weapon in the US inventory up until ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Plumbob-Hood 74kt

Hood was the largest atmospheric test ever conducted at NTS (and in continental US). This was a test of a two-stage thermonuclear device designed by UCRL (University of California Radiation Laboratory), even though the US government stated at the time that no thermonuclear tests were being conducted in Nevada. The design was intended to fill a gap in 300-400 lb. thermonuclear warhead technology, and was tested at reduced yield. The predicted yield was 60-80 kt. The device used a boosted Swan primary (which gave yields of 12-19 kt in other tests during Plumbbob). About 7 kt of the overall yield was from fusion. The device was a small diameter system (12.1 inches) and was 42.2 inches long. Total device weight was 393 lb. The test also included troop maneuvers by 2500 Marines, and air operations by 124 aircraft. Operation Plumbbob was conducted at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) from May through October of 1957. It was the sixth test series at NTS and consisted of 29 tests. Six of these were safety tests, and two did not produce any nuclear yield. This series addressed several objectives, including tactical weapon proof tests, safety tests, and component and mockup testing for thermonuclear systems to be detonated in Hardtack I, among other things. During Plumbbob 16000 DOD personnel participated in the Desert Rock VII and VIII exercises. The LASL shots were named for deceased scientists, the UCRL shots were named for North American mountains. Plumbbob released some 58300 ...

Nuclear Weapons - Broken Arrows & Accidents 1/2

Nuclear weapons are designed with great care to explode only when deliberately armed and fired. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility that, as a result of accidental circumstances, an explosion will take place inadvertently. Although all conceivable precautions are taken to prevent them, such accidents might occur in areas where weapons are assembled and stored, during the course of loading and transportation on the ground, or when actually in the delivery vehicle, eg, an airplane or a missile." Atomic Energy Commission/Department of Defense, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, 1962.

US Airforce Nuclear Weapons Effects On Aircraft

United States nuclear tests were conducted on an intermittent basis from July 1946 to October 1958. During this period, nuclear tests were conducted in groups known as "operations" or "test series", each series was a distinct operation that was organized and carried out independently of other operations. On 31 October 1958, just after it concluded the largest test series to date, the United States entered into a unilateral testing moratorium announced by President Eisenhower with the understanding that the former Soviet Union also would refrain from conducting tests. The Soviet Union honored this moratorium initially, but secretly prepared for a massive testing campaign which commenced in September 1961, and included the largest nuclear tests ever conducted. On September 15, 1961, the United States resumed testing at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) on a year-round basis with Operation Nougat. From that time to the present, tests have principally been grouped for fiscal and reporting purposes into "operations" or "series" according to the fiscal year in which they took place. For example, fiscal year 1963 tests -- which began 1 July 1962 and extended through 30 June 1963 -- were in the Operation Storax series. Important exceptions to this scheme were a number of test series conducted during 1962-63: Operation Dominic (which also been called Dominic I), conducted between 25 April and 4 November of 1962 (and thus overlapping Nougat and Storax); and which included the Department ...

Nuclear Weapons Newsreel - Nuclear Testing

A nuclear weapon derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions of fusion or fission. As a result, even a nuclear weapon with a small yield is significantly more powerful than the largest conventional explosives, and a single weapon is capable of destroying an entire city. In the history of warfare, two nuclear weapons have been detonated — both by the United States, during the closing days of World War II. The first was detonated on the morning of 6 August 1945, when the United States dropped a uranium gun-type device code-named "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The second was detonated three days later when the United States dropped a plutonium implosion-type device code-named "Fat Man" on the city of Nagasaki. These bombings resulted in the immediate deaths of around 120000 people from injuries sustained from the explosion and acute radiation sickness, and even more deaths over time from long-term effects of radiation. The use of these weapons was and remains controversial. (See Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for a full discussion.) Since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, nuclear weapons have been detonated on over two thousand occasions for testing purposes and demonstration purposes. The only countries known to have detonated such weapons are (chronologically) the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, the People's Republic of China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. Various other countries may hold nuclear ...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Ivy-Mike 10.4mt

Ivy Mike was the codename given to the first US test of a fusion device where a major part of the explosive yield came from fusion. It was detonated on November 1, 1952 by the United States at 11.6709 N, 162.1980 E on Enewetak, an atoll in the Pacific Ocean, as part of Operation Ivy. The device was the first full test of the Teller-Ulam design, a staged fusion bomb, and is generally considered the first successful test of a hydrogen bomb. Due to its physical size and fusion fuel type (cryogenic liquid deuterium) the Mike device was not suitable for use as a thermonuclear weapon; it was intended as an extremely conservative experiment to validate the concepts used for multi-megaton detonations. A simplified and lightened bomb version (the EC-16) was prepared, and scheduled to be tested in operation Castle Yankee, as a backup in case the non-cryogenic "Shrimp" fusion device (tested in Castle Bravo) failed to work; that test was cancelled when the Bravo device was tested successfully, making the cryogenic designs obsolete.

US Airforce Training Video-Nuclear Weapons Broken Arrows 1/2

The Strategic Air Command (SAC) was the operational establishment of the United States Air Force in charge of America's bomber-based and ballistic missile-based strategic nuclear arsenal from 1946 to 1992. SAC also controlled the infrastructure necessary to support their operations (such as tanker aircraft to fuel the bombers and, until 1959, fighter escorts). On October 19, 1948 Lt. General Curtis Emerson LeMay took over as commander of SAC, and set about a dramatic rebuilding of the command's forces, as well as their mission. LeMay, who had masterminded the American attacks on the Japanese mainland during the war (including the firebombing of Tokyo and other cities), was a staunch believer in the power of strategic bombing: the destruction of an enemy's cities and industrial centers. LeMay believed that the existence of the atomic bomb made this type of warfare the only workable strategy, rendering battlefield conflicts essentially obsolete. Under LeMay's command, SAC became the cornerstone of American national strategic policy during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. This policy was based primarily on nuclear deterrence. In 1962 there were 282723 personnel assigned (217650 airmen, 28531 civilians and 38542 officers). SAC's motto became "Peace is Our Profession," symbolizing the intention to maintain peace through the threat of overwhelming force. LeMay was not a great believer in mutually assured destruction (MAD): he felt strongly (particularly in SAC's early years ...

Atomic Energy Commission/Department of Defense, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, 1962. As US policymakers and the media continue to ponder the threat posed by the proliferation of nuclear weapons into the 21st century, questions regarding the utility of these weapons will repeatedly surface. Moral and ethical aversions against these weapons aside, their military utility has been questioned by opponents of nuclear weaponry because of their destructive capabilities and the disastrous consequences in the rare event of an accident. The operational risks associated with nuclear weapons jeopardize the safety and well-being of numerous civilians as well as military personnel. The history of US nuclear weapon accidents is as old as their introduction into the American military arsenal. The first known, officially acknowledged accident occurred in February 1950, when an American B-36 bomber jettisoned a bomb into the Pacific Ocean. The record of these accidents, however, has been ...

1950's Cold War US Airforce Training Video - Nuclear Weapons

Politicians Asked "What country in the Middle East ACTUALLY has Nukes?" Watch the Weasels Squirm

An excerpt from George Washington's Farewell Address: "A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification." Declassified US Nuclear Test Film #32

0800032 - US Army Presents MF20 9811, Ivy Flats Film Report - 1962 - 17:35 - Black&White - Ivy Flats, a 1962 tactical military exercise at the Nevada Test Site, involved the detonation of live nuclear rounds fired from the Davy Crockett artillery piece. The Davy Crockett was developed to give US Army units an effective nuclear capability against potentially larger units of Soviet armored forces. The Davy Crockett, a recoilless launcher, was the third artillery piece deployed, those earlier being a l55 mm piece designed to fire a nuclear round and a 288 mm mobile piece, commonly called an "atomic cannon." Nuclear-capable ground artillery pieces were gradually replaced by increasingly accurate, nuclear carrying missiles and aircraft. The Ivy Flats video shows an Army exercise that was observed by visiting dignitaries, including US Attorney General Robert Kennedy and General Maxwell Taylor, a Presidential military adviser. Participating in the exercise were members of the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division from Ft. Lewis, Washington. Ivy Flats was a "battle" between a large simulated enemy armored force and a smaller US force consisting of conventional artillery pieces, which could not stop the pending onslaught. US Army squads then arrive in armored personnel carriers and set up the heavy (l55 mm) and light (120 mm) versions of recoilless launchers. The Davy Crockett fired a nuclear round that decimated the mock opposing force. The Davy Crockett was deployed from 1961 to 1971 ...

Nuclear Tests to the 1812 Overture

Note: people are taking this video way too seriously and reading way more into it than they need to. This is just a video of some enormous explosions - the largest mankind has ever produced. Everyone loves explosions, right? They're eyecandy and pretty damn impressive. These were tests, nobody was hurt directly by these. Yes, we can have a long debate about what the long term concequences of the fallout are and we can turn this into a big argument over the United States' place in the world, the Soviet Union, the Cold War, Hiroshima, the ethics of having nuclear weapons at all, the enviornmental impact of tests, the validity of nuclear weapons as a deterrent, Hiroshima, Nagasaki etc etc etc... DON'T BE THAT GUY! Just enjoy the goddamned explosions. You may have seen the 1812 overture done with fireworks before, but here are some REALLY big fireworks. The movie does not account for the fact that it takes time for the sound to get from the explosion to the observer, because it wouldn't look as cool then. And yes..those troops are very close to the explosions. It was not completely understood at the time the consequences of longterm exposure to fallout. Most of them were okay in the long run, but a few had problems. Too bad...

Nuclear Artillery - The 280 MM Gun at the Nevada Proving Ground Upshot-Knothole Shot GRABLE

Courtesy National Nuclear Security Administration / Nevada Site Office The 280 MM Gun at the Nevada Proving Ground The first artillery test was on May 25, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the US test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb); it was fired from a special artillery piece, nicknamed "Atomic Annie", built by the Artillery Test Unit of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Around 3200 personnel were present. The warhead was designated the W9 and 80 were produced from 1952-53 for the T-124 shell. It was retired in 1957. en.wikipedia.org

0800066 - High-Altitude Nuclear Weapon Effects Part One - Phenomenology - 1963 - 20:53 - Color - When nuclear weapons are detonated at high altitudes, they cause dramatic changes in the atmosphere and ionosphere. In a very technical presentation, this video discusses such things as the interactions of electrons and positive ions and shows the electromagnetic regions and how they carry electrical charges from one hemisphere to another. The video also discusses how there is much information unknown about nuclear explosions at extremely high altitudes, especially above 250 kilometers, where there is less atmospheric resistance.

Nukes to stop oil leak:- Biblical Prophecy!

For the League of Reason show Sunday 18th July 2010 (edited for length and coherence) Christian caller Thickshades decrees that if you read the Bible 'properly' and with 'wisdom' it is possible to predict the future. He his then asked to use his skill and wisdom in reading the Bible to predict the future with hilariously funny results. Turns out he thinks that in the first instance that the Bible specifically predicts that nukes will be used to seal the oil in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. When he is pushed on this topic by andromedaswake he then kinda has a change of heart and announces that the Bible can't predict crap. Naturally we invite Thickshades back to clarify exactly how he got from the Bible to nukes in the Gulf of Mexico to seal an oil leak in 2010. Next show is 1st August 2010 3pm EST

Declassified US Nuclear Test Film #59

0800059 - The United States Army Presents TF9 3370, Technical Proficiency Inspection - 1963 - 23:50 - Black&White - This video describes the rigorous yearly proficiency inspections that Army nuclear weapon personnel were subjected to by teams from the Office of the Inspector General (IG). The Army stated that the efficiency of nuclear weapons maintenance specialists is vital to the overall effectiveness of the readiness effort for nuclear deterrence. Cold War era weapons such as the Honest John and Nike Hercules missiles and a Mark 33 8-inch nuclear artillery projectile are featured in inspection scenarios. Rare footage of the Atomic Demolition Munition and the Davey Crockett missile can be seen in short vignettes. The video shows graphically how flaws in the weapon hardware could cause the missile to become unreliable. The Army unit flunks the inspection and receives an unsatisfactory rating. The unit commander directs his personnel to correct the deficiencies, and he is reminded to stay in constant contact with all members of his technical teams. Because of attrition, the IGs representative suggests that the commander retain those who are trained and are serious about making nuclear weapons handling a career choice.
